Revamping I Renovation of Aiwan-e-Nawadrat-e-Quaid i-Azam (Quaid's Museum) at Mazar-e-Quaid, Karachi.
The project will hereinafter be called the “Museum”.
Karachi (East)Sindh Province, Aiwan-e-Nawadrat-e-Quaid-i-Azam at Quaid-i-Azam Mazar. Karachi, Sindh.
Quaid-i-Azam Mazar Management Board (QMMB), National Heritage & Culture Division, Government of Pakistan.
Resident Engineer, Quaid-i-Azam Mazar Management Board through Consultant.
Office of the Resident Engineer, Quaid-i-Azam Mazar Management Board, Karachi.
National Heritage & Culture Division, Government of Pakistan.
The Museum Hall was built with the Main Mausoleum Building in 1970. The showcases were also constructed at that time. The relics were set up in the Museum starting 1984, and the Museum was inaugurated in March 1988 and was opened to the public in December 1988.
The Museum contains about 850 precious & irreplaceable relics consisting of personal belongings, furniture, two cars and many photographs belonging to the Quaid, and these need to be preserved for future generations.
The area of the museum is approximately 4900 sft on one level. The existing plans of the Museum are given in Section 8.
The existing ANQA Hall can cater only about 100 visitors at one time, whereas on weekends and special days, nearly double of that number are present. For proper management only 100 visitors are allowed at one time and remaining are kept waiting outside.
The new layout has been conceived considering the above factors. The biggest attraction of Museum are the two cars belonging to Quaid-i-Azam. These cars will be shifted in center of Museum & enclosed in a large glass showcase. This fulfills two major purposes firstly the visitors will have a full 360° view of the cars and secondly it will make a natural passage so that visitors will only move in one direction.
Showcase will be made along three walls of the Museum, while on the fourth side 10' wide showcase will be constructed where large items such as dining table, sofa set and bedroom furniture will be displayed.
An 18' x 10' room is conceived as on Digital Audio-Visual Room where small documentaries about life and struggle of Quaid-i-Azam, his companions and freedom movement will be displayed for the visitors.
Curatorial Display:
To inform the visitors about the relics, their history, relevance, interactive screens will be installed in each showcase where all the related information will be displayed. The visitors of the Museum will not only be able to see the relics but simultaneously be informed thru audio/visual arrangements about the significance of that particular relic.
Currently it is practically impossible to control the visitors flow in the Museum as showcases are scattered and it is up to the choice of visitors to see which part first. This coupled with the niches of existing design makes it very difficult to control the flow of the visitors, especially in rush hours. The proposed design will mitigate this problem & create a uni-directional movements for the visitors. Similarly, the exit will be shifted alongside the entrance so that visitors do not have to turn back to exit the Museum after seeing all of the relics, which happens in the existing design. Emergency exit will also be made in proposed design so that if the Museum is to be vacated it could be evacuated immediately.
The existing design of the Museum at any one point of time can only cater to approximately 100 visitors, whereas, during the weekends and on special days, nearly double of that number are present. For the security of relics and visitors only 100 visitors are allowed at one time and remaining are kept waiting outside. Once twenty or thirty visitors leave the Museum, then the other batch of 20 to 30 visitors are allowed inside. Because of the revised design and better visitor's flow most of the visitors will be allowed to enter the Museum.
Considering the population rate and other factors it is expected that in next ten years the number of visitors to the Museum will double. The new design is required to accommodate the visitor demand for next ten years of approximately 1000 visitors per day.
The project has been initiated, and completion deadline is 18 Months from the Award of Contract.
